Mitch Johnson Biography

Mitch Johnson is an American basketball coach who will succeed Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs. Growing up in Seattle, he is the son of former NBA champion John Johnson. He went on to play for Stanford University, setting a school record with 16 assists in a 2008 NCAA Tournament game and helping the Cardinal reach the Sweet 16.

After a brief professional playing career with the NBA G-League's Tulsa 66ers and leagues in Europe, he pivoted to coaching. Johnson joined the Spurs organization in 2016 as an assistant for the Austin Spurs, San Antonio's local G-League affiliate, and moved to the NBA squad in 2019 under Popovich. He coached Summer League teams in 2022 and 2023 and stepped in as interim head coach three times before his permanent appointment. His 2024–2025 interim stint yielded a 31–45 record, showcasing his ability to lead a young Spurs roster featuring Victor Wembanyama. Known for his communication skills and player development, he looks to continue Spurs basketball's enduring legacy and culture.
