Matthew Schaefer Biography

The Canadian ice hockey defenseman Matthew Schaefer defends for the Erie Otters in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Schaefer was born on September 5, 2007 in Hamilton Ontario and the New York Islanders selected him as their first overall pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.

The 6 feet 2 inches tall and 183 pounds defenseman Schaefer possesses exceptional skating skills and hockey intelligence and demonstrates leadership qualities on the ice. During the 2024–25 OHL season Schaefer played 17 games for the Otters while scoring 22 points (7 goals, 15 assists) and earning a plus-21 rating. His achievements led to him receiving the CHL Top Prospect Award.

Schaefer has played for Canada at multiple international competitions. Schaefer led Team Canada White to win gold at the 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge while helping Canada claim victory at the 2024 IIHF U18 World Championship. Schaefer became the third-youngest defenseman to play for Canada at the World Junior Championship in 2025.

Schaefer experienced two major life challenges when his mother passed away from breast cancer in February 2024 followed by the death of his billet mother from suicide. Through his challenges he has shown both strength and unwavering commitment to his athletic career.

Schaefer begins his professional career with the Islanders while establishing himself as a defensive cornerstone who will lead the team with his skills and determination.
