Mark Tewksbury Biography

Mark Tewksbury is a Canadian Olympic gold medalist swimmer, human rights advocate, and motivational speaker. Inspired by the 1976 Montreal Olympics, he trained with the University of Calgary Swim Club, winning four Commonwealth Games golds (1986, 1990) in the 100m backstroke and medley relay, plus seven Pan Pacific medals. At the 1988 Seoul Olympics, he earned a silver medal in the 4x100m medley relay. His career peaked at the 1992 Barcelona Games, where he clinched gold in the 100m backstroke and relay bronze, becoming Canada's first gold medalist at those Games. Retiring after setting seven world records, Tewksbury hosted “How It’s Made” (2001), served as Canada’s 2012 Olympic Chef de Mission, and advocated for LGBTQ+ rights at the UN. Out as Canada’s first openly gay Olympian in 1998, he mentors athletes, critiques IOC issues, and delivers keynotes on leadership. He has been honored with the Bonham Centre Award (2015) and also authored “Inside Out” (2006).
