Jerry Bailey Biography

Jerry Bailey is a retired American Hall of Fame Thoroughbred jockey and horse racing analyst. He is considered one of the most successful jockeys in history, with over 5,800 wins.

A native of El Paso, Texas, he developed a passion for racing with his father’s interest in quarter horses. He began riding at the age of 17, winning his first race in the fall of 1974 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. After moving to New York in 1982, he became a leading jockey, frequently winning the local circuit at Belmont, Saratoga, and Aqueduct. He also won the Belmont Stakes and Kentucky Derby twice.

He secured seven Eclipse Awards as Outstanding Jockey and won 15 Breeders’ Cup races, earning $295 million in purses.

After retiring in 2006, he joined ESPN as an analyst, then NBC Sports in 2011, covering the Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup. He co-authored “Against the Odds” with Tom Pedulla, detailing his career.

Bailey was inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame in 1995. He remains close to the sport by being a prominent voice in NBC’s Breeders’ Cup coverage and engaging with fans on social media.
