The University of North Carolina Tar Heels field hockey team has Erin Matson as its current head coach after she retired from playing field hockey as a former American field hockey player. The field hockey journey of Erin Matson started in 2006 when she became a midfielder. Matson attended Unionville High School from 2018 until she graduated in 2018 before choosing to play collegiate field hockey under UNC head coach Karen Shelton.
The UNC field hockey program experienced one of its most successful periods during Matson's four-year collegiate career from 2018 to 2022. The Tar Heels earned four NCAA Championships together with five Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) titles during Matson's playing years. During her time at the University of North Carolina, Matson won five ACC Offensive Player of the Year awards and five ACC Player of the Year awards which made her the first player to accomplish this historic feat in any sport. She achieved the Field Hockey Honda Sports Award three times which established her as the second player after Coach Shelton to receive this honor.
Matson received her appointment as UNC field hockey head coach in January 2023 to succeed the retiring Coach Shelton. She became the youngest Division I field hockey head coach at 22 years old. The first-year head coach Matson directed the Tar Heels to achieve an 18–3 record which resulted in both ACC and NCAA Championship titles.
Since age 17, Matson has been part of the U.S. Women's National Team. The U.S. Women's National Team player led the 2022 Pan American Cup in Chile with the most goals and has competed in India and England and South Africa and New Zealand among other countries. The Indoor Pan American Cup gold medal victory in March 2024 earned the U.S. a spot in the 2025 FIH Indoor World Cup.
The businesswoman Matson operates “One” as her company while also running summer clinics and selling equipment that carries her branding. The Advertising and Public Relations major with a minor in Coaching Education earned her degree in December 2022.
