Bob Bowman Biography

Bob Bowman is one of the world’s most accomplished and influential swimming coaches. He is currently the Director of Swimming and head men’s coach at the University of Texas at Austin. His career spans decades and is highlighted by his transformative work with Olympic legend Michael Phelps and the next generation of swimmers like Léon Marchand. 

Bowman, a graduate of Florida State University, studied developmental psychology. This coursework helped set the foundation for his long-term coaching philosophy of data-driven individualized training that produces mental toughness and stamina. 

Before heading to Austin, Texas, he coached at North Baltimore Aquatic Club (1996–2004), the University of Michigan (2005–2008), and Arizona State University (2015–2024).

He served as a U.S. Olympic coach in 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016. In 2024, he coached both Team USA and Team France. He coached Michael Phelps to 28 Olympic medals, including 21 individual medals and 19 individual golds. Bowman was named USA Swimming Coach of the Year in 2001, 2003, and three consecutive years thereafter, starting in 2006. 

He co-authored “The Golden Rules: 10 Steps to World-Class Excellence in Your Life and Work.”
