Alana Nichols is an American Paralympic athlete renowned for being the first U.S. woman to win gold medals in both Summer and Winter Paralympic Games. A snowboarding accident at 17 left her paralyzed from the waist down after a backflip attempt broke her T10/11 vertebrae. Despite this, Nichols excelled in adaptive sports, winning gold in wheelchair basketball at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics and two golds (downhill, giant slalom), a silver (super-G), and a bronze (super combined) in alpine skiing at the 2010 Vancouver Paralympics. She competed in five Paralympics (2008–2016), earning six medals across wheelchair basketball, alpine skiing, and paracanoe.
