Top UFC Fighter Paige VanZant Speaks at RGJ.com Sports Awards

UFC fighter Paige VanZant spent some of her young adulthood in Reno, Nevada and cultivated an interest in mixed martial arts. On May 31st, she returned to town to speak at the RGJ.com Sports Awards.

The event was held from 6-9 p.m. at the Silver Legacy Resort Casino. More than 160 student-athletes from Northern Nevada were honored for their accomplishments.

Individual tickets to attend the awards ceremony were $45. It was a great visit for VanZant, who originally came to MMA by finding Ken Shamrock's Lion's Den gym in Reno.

VanZant became a professional fighter in 2012 and made her UFC debut two years later. In that initial bout, she defeated Kailin Curran via a third round TKO in a contest that won Fight of the Night.

VanZant won her first three UFC fights before falling to Rose Namajunas in a UFC Fight Night card that she headlined. She rebounded by winning Performance of the Night at UFC on Fox: Maia vs. Condit in 2016.

VanZant gained greater popularity outside of the Octagon through her appearance on season 22 of Dancing with the Stars. She finished second on the season with her partner Mark Ballas.
