Top Referee Ed Hochuli Retires from the NFL

One of the NFL's most recognizable personalities made retirement official yesterday. Referee Ed Hochuli is stepping away from the sidelines after a 27-year career with the league.

Hochuli is one of the most successful officials in sports history. He refereed Super Bowl XXXII, Super Bowl XXXVIII and seven conference championship games.

Overall, Hochuli officiated 25 playoff games. He started with the NFL as a back judge in 1990 before becoming a crew chief in 1992.

Fans will also remember Hochuli for his buff physique that made him stand out amongst other referees on Sundays. He even graced the cover of Sports Illustrated in 2012.

Hochuli now has more time to spend at his second job as a trial lawyer and partner in the firm Jones, Skelton and Hochuli.  His son, Shawn, replaces him as an NFL referee and will continue the family legacy.

Hochuli has frequently been in-demand for speaking engagements throughout his career and will continue to be a popular name on the circuit. He gives presentations on leadership principles, managing crisis and dealing with failure.
