One of the top defensive players in all of football is scheduled to keynote the StarNewsVarsity Awards Banquet this summer. In-state sports hero Luke Kuechly will have the honors of speaking at the inaugural event. 

The festivities will be held on June 20th at the Wilmington Convention Center. Athletes across 21 sports from Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender counties will be honored. 

In addition to his presentation, Kuechly will also address questions from the student-athletes assembled. General admission tickets are $50, but all players who were either first or second team StarNewsVarsity All-Area picks can attend for free. 

Kuechly is the Carolina Panthers all-time leading tackler with 693 tackles. He led the NFL in the category as a rookie in 2012 and again in 2014. 

After being the ninth overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft, Kuechly picked up NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. The following year, he became the youngest player ever to win the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award. 

Kuechly is a four-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro. In 2015, he helped lead the Panthers to the Super Bowl and collected 29 tackles during their postseason run.
