St. Joseph’s Basketball Coach Phil Martelli Speaks at Columbus Monument Celebration October 12th

St. Joseph's University basketball coach Phil Martelli is a former resident of Norristown, Pennsylvania. He is coming back to town on October 12th when he speaks at a 25th anniversary celebration for the Columbus monument. 

The event will be held at 11 a.m. at the corner of Harding Boulevard and Sterigere Street. Elmwood Park Zoo and J.P. Mascaro & Sons have organized the celebration. 

The public is invited to attend the festivities free of charge. The U.S. and Italian national anthems will be sung and attendees will recite the Pledge of Allegiance. 

Martelli has been the head coach at St. Joseph's for 21 seasons and won 414 games. He had guided the Hawks to seven NCAA Tournaments and six NIT berths. 

St. Joseph's has been the Atlantic 10 regular season champions four times under Martelli's watch. He is a four-time A-10 Coach of the Year. 

In 2004, the Hawks went 30-2, made it to the Elite Eight and Martelli was named AP National Coach of the Year. Before being named head coach, he spent a decade as an assistant at the school.
