Olympic Swimming Gold Medalist Kevin Cordes Makes Appearance at Hometown 5K Run

Olympic gold medalist Kevin Cordes recently received a hero's welcome upon his return home.  On Saturday, he was in Naperville, Illinois as a special guest at the Mind 5K.

The race was held at St. James Farm.  During Cordes' appearance, he stood at the starting line, giving high-fives to the runners as they began.

He also handed medals to the winners and posed for photos.  The race stood as a fundraiser for the National Alliance on Mental Illness of DuPage County.

Cordes won a gold medal in Rio as a member of the U.S. 4x100 meter individual medley relay.  He raced in the preliminaries of the competition for Team USA.

At the Olympic Trials, Cordes won the 100m breastroke with an American record-setting time while finishing second in the 200m breaststroke.  The previous year, he also won three World Championship medals.

Cordes swam collegiately at the University of Arizona and won seven NCAA titles.  He was the 2013 and 2014 NCAA Swimmer of the Year.
