Olympic Swimmer Aaron Peirsol Speaks at Athletic Awards Dinner

Olympic swimmer and Newport Beach native Aaron Peirsol is a role model to kids throughout Southern California for his exploits in the pool. On Thursday, he helped honor some of his admirers by speaking at the 56th annual Athletic Awards Dinner.

The event was hosted at the Radisson Hotel Newport Beach by the Commodores Club of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce. Top athletes from Corona del Mar, Newport Harbor, and Sage Hill high schools were recognized.

Peirsol began his rise to swimming stardom at Newport Harbor. Overall, 36 student-athletes received some kind of recognition at the banquet.

Peirsol is a seven-time Olympic medalist. In 2000, he made his Olympic debut in Sydney and took home silver in the 200-meter backstroke.

Four years later, Peirsol won three of his five career gold medals. He is a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the 4x100 m medley, an event he shares the world record in with his teammates.

Peirsol is also a world record holder in the 200 m backstroke. He retired from the sport in 2011 and was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2016.
