Olympic Boxing Champion Claressa Shields Speaks at Lansing State Journal Sports Awards

Boxer Claressa Shields came out of Flint, Michigan and rose to Olympic fame. On Wednesday, she was looking to give back to the area as the speaker at the Lansing State Journal Sports Awards.

The event was held at the Warton Center. Athletes from 31 different sports and various high schools across mid-Michigan were honored.

The student-athletes in attendance got to walk a red carpet. Shields talk was focused on overcoming obstacles and finding a passion.

Shields captured the women’s middleweight gold medal at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. She went a remarkable 78-1 in her amateur career.

Following the Games in Rio, Shields became a professional. This March, she became the NABF female middleweight title holder.

Shields was a victim of sexual abuse growing up and has looked towards her Christian faith to give her strength. She is an ambassador for Up2Us Sports, a group that provides coaching resources for underserved youth.
