Olympic Champion Jordyn Wieber Named Keynote Speaker for LSJ Sports Awards

Jordyn Wieber is now a celebrated Olympic champion, but one can trace the roots of her stellar gymnastic career right back to Mid-Michigan. The Dewitt, Michigan native is beloved by aspiring athletes throughout the region and some will get to hear directly from her as she serves as keynote speaker at the LSJ Sports Awards.

Wieber will be the featured guest for a red-carpet ceremony that will celebrate over 300 athletes. The event takes place on June 4 at the Wharton Center on the campus of Michigan State University.

The guest list is made up from student-athletes from 31 sports who were recognized as a member of a Lansing State Journal dream team. The highlight awards handed out at the ceremony include Male and Female Athlete of the Year and players of the year in each sport.

Wieber was a member of the “Fierce Five” and took home a team gold medal for the United States at the 2012 Olympics. In the lead-up to the Games, she won all individual all-around and was part of the gold medal U.S. team at the 2011 World Championships.

That same year, Wieber was a finalist for the James E. Sullivan Award given to the top amateur athlete in the country. She retired from gymnastics in 2015 and has served as an assistant gymnastics coach at UCLA.

Locally in Michigan, Wieber has been recognized as a member of the Dewitt Athletic Hall of Fame and the Greater Lansing Sports Hall of Fame. She has remained a popular pick for speaking engagements and endorsements even after her competitive career.
