Jack Harbaugh Talks Famous Coaching Family at Building Character Celebration

Jack Harbaugh has an infectious energy that he has passed on to his two coaching sons, Jim and John. That famous enthusiasm was on display again when Harbaugh was the keynote speaker on Wednesday at the Boy Scouts of America Building Character Celebration.

The event was held at the J.W. Marriott in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Harbaugh shared stories about his family and lessons he has learned from life.

He harkened back to the seventh grade and talked about how the first football tackling drill he ever participated in changed his life. Facing off against a much larger opponent that day taught him that he would never go through life scared.

Harbaugh channeled that lesson as he went on to a successful coaching career. He spent 14 years as a college assistant before getting his first head coaching job at Western Michigan in 1982.

Harbaugh is best known for coaching Western Kentucky from 1989-2002. The Hilltoppers made four appearances in the Division I-AA playoffs and won the I-AA National Championship in his final season.

Harbaugh compiled a 91-68 record at WKU and went on to serve on Jim's staffs as running backs coach at San Diego and Stanford. He got to see both sons square off as head coaches in Super Bowl XLVII.
