Celebrating Dr. King's Enduring Impact in the Lone Star State
No figure embodies the spirit and legacy of the Civil Rights Movement more powerfully than Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. For decades, communities nationwide have come together each January to celebrate his memory and principles. No one does it bigger than the City of San Antonio, which will honor the visionary with its annual 2.5-mile MLK March, culminating in festivities at Pittman-Sullivan Park beginning at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 19th. Event organizers tasked Athlete Speakers with securing a talent that exemplified the values of MLK Jr. We secured Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas to serve as the keynote speaker.
The decorated American artistic gymnast and three-time Olympic gold medalist rose to fame at the 2012 London Olympics, where at age 16 she became the first African American woman to win both the individual all-around and team gold medals in the same Games. Nicknamed "the Flying Squirrel" for her explosive uneven bars releases, she also contributed to the U.S. team's dominance. Douglas returned for the 2016 Rio Olympics, helping secure another team gold. With six Olympic and World Championship medals total, she ranks among the most decorated U.S. female gymnasts. After a hiatus, she attempted a comeback toward Paris 2024 but has since focused on advocacy and public speaking.

The event aims to draw around 300,000 people for an all-day celebration. Attendees can look forward to multicultural performances, a health-and-wellness area, information and community booths, and a performance from Grammy Award-winning R&B songbird Coco Jones.
