Former SEC Defensive Player of the Year Michael Sam Speaks at Auburn University October 5th

Former NFL player and college football star Michael Sam has an important speaking engagement ahead of him next week.  He is the keynote presenter at Auburn University's kickoff event for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning History Month.

The LGBTQI+ event will be held on October 5th.  It takes place from 6-8 p.m. at Roy Hall Auditorium.

Various school organizations are sponsorsing Sam's appearance.  The title of his speech is, "From Hitchcock High to the NFL: I Am Michael Sam".

Sam made national headlines when he came out as gay prior to the 2014 NFL Draft.  He became the first publicly gay player to be selected when the St. Louis Rams took him in the seventh round.

After going public, Sam was presented with the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the ESPY's.  While he has not reached great levels of NFL success, he was a dominant force on the college football gridiron.

Sam starred for the University of Missouri and was the 2013 Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year.  He was also a first-team All-SEC pick and a consensus All-American.
