Former NFL Wide Receiver Vance Johnson Speaks at International Overdose Awareness Day

Vance Johnson has seen the road to recovery from addiction first hand. He was able to share his experiences at a special International Overdose Awareness Day event last Thursday.

The Trenton, New Jersey native was back in his hometown speaking to those assembled in Veterans Park. The event served as Mercer County's official observance of International Overdose Awareness Day.

Johnson talked about using drugs and alcohol to fill a void that football left in his life. There were also several local officials who addressed the crowd during a candlelight vigil.

Johnson spent 11 seasons in the NFL, ten of them with the Denver Broncos. He helped lead the Broncos to three Super Bowl appearances in the 1980s.

In Super Bowl XXI, Johnson caught five passes for 121 yards and a touchdown. He had his best season in 1989, when he had 76 receptions for 1,095 yards and seven touchdowns.

Johnson retired in 1995, but suffered from addiction issues. He is now four years sober and has been a certified recovery coach for Behavioral Health of the Palm Beaches.
