Former NFL Quarterback Ryan Leaf Keynotes Drug and Alcohol Awareness Banquet

Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf has made the most of a troubled past. He now is using his experience to make a positive impact in the lives of others.

Last night, Leaf was the keynote speaker for the annual Merrill Scott Symposium Alcohol and Drug Awareness Banquet. The event was hosted by Sundown M Ranch at 7 p.m. at the Yakima Visitors and Convention Center.

Leaf was able to tell his story of addiction and recovery. Individual tickets were $50 per person and tables of ten were $500.

Leaf first starred at Washington State, earning first-team All-American honors in 1997. He was also named the Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year and a Heisman Trophy finalist.

The San Diego Chargers selected Leaf with the second overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft. He spent four seasons in the league, but his life quickly spiraled out of control.

Leaf became addicted to opioids and spent time in prison on burglary, theft and drug charges. He is now sober and travels the country speaking to others and raising awareness about addiction.
