Former NBA Standout Derrick Coleman Hosts YMCA Detroit Fundraiser

Former NBA standout Derrick Coleman has stayed true to his Detroit, Michigan roots over the years. Next Saturday, he will host a special fundraising event for inner city youth.

The 37th Annual Achievers Awards takes place at the Boll Family YMCA. The event is titled "Tux & Tens-Around the World" and its aim is to help with college preparatory and mentoring programs.

There are several sponsorship opportunities available that include tickets. In addition to Coleman, actor Hill Harper is another special guest who will also speak.

Coleman was a three-time first-team All-Big East selection at Syracuse. He was a consensus first-team All-American and the Big East Player of the Year in 1990.

The New Jersey Nets made Coleman the top pick of the 1990 NBA Draft and he earned Rookie of the Year honors during his first season. Coleman went on to be a two-time All-NBA Third Team pick and an All-Star in 1994.

He spent the first five seasons of his career with the Nets and averaged 19.8 points and 10.6 rebounds. He ended up playing for three other franchises before retiring following the 2006 season.
