Former NBA Player Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf Speaks at Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast in January

Beloit, Wisconsin has a special guest from the world of sports attending their second annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Breakfast. Former NBA player Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf is the featured speaker.

The event runs 8-10 a.m. at the Eclipse Center on January 15th. Last year’s inaugural event welcomed nearly 600 people and four tables are already reserved this year.

Individual tickets are currently available for $25. In addition to Abdul-Rauf’s presentation, there will be students reading essays and musical performances.

Abdul-Rauf had a successful nine-year NBA career, but he is better known for his social activism. He refused to stand for the national anthem before games in 1996 due to his Muslim faith.

Many see Abdul-Rauf actions as a forerunner for the political and social statements made by athletes today. He was initially suspended, but eventually allowed to nod his head and pray during the anthem.

Abdul-Rauf also picked up several on-court accolades in his career, including winning the NBA’s Most Improved Player award in 1993. He was a two-time consensus All-American at LSU.
