Five-Time Pro Bowl Linebacker Hardy Nickerson Speaks at Illini Quarterback Club

The University of Illinois football program has the benefit of having one of the greatest players of his generation on the coaching staff. Former linebacker Hardy Nickerson shared his expertise with the Illini Quarterback Club on Thursday.

The event was held at the Memorial Stadium recruiting lounge and a crowd of around 200 people showed up. Nickerson talked about the first three games of the season. 

He also praised his young defensive core for their efforts early in the 2017 campaign. Nickerson took part in a question and answer session where many of the queries focused on his career in the pros. 

Nickerson spent 16 seasons in the NFL after originally being selected in the fifth round by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1987. After spending the first six years of his career with the Steelers before coming into the prime of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. 

Nickerson went to five Pro Bowls and was a four-time All-Pro while with the Buccaneers. He was also named the "Whizzer" White NFL Man of the year in 1997 and was a member of the 1990s All-Decade Team. 

Nickerson retired from football in 2002 after playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Green Bay Packers. He is currently the defensive coordinator at Illinois after coaching stints in the NFL with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay.
