espnW Names Baseball Writer Claire Smith Keynote Speaker for Conference at the University of Maryland

Claire Smith has been a trailblazer in the field of sports journalism. She was the ideal type of speaker when espnW and the University of Maryland's Shirley Povich Center were coming up with a groundbreaking conference for female sports journalists.

"Women, Sports and Media: Coverage, Careers, Consequences" takes place April 20-21 at Knight Hall on campus. The goal is to discuss issues facing women journalists and how female athletes are covered.

Registration for students is $30 and the deadline to sign up is April 13th. Professional registration is $50 until March 23rd and it goes up $10 after that.

Smith became the first African-American writer to cover Major League Baseball on a full-time basis. She followed the New York Yankees from 1983-87 for The Hartford Courant

Smith went on to work as a columnist at The New York Times and a columnist and editor for The Philadephia Inquirer. She began her career at the Bucks County Courier.

Smith currently works at ESPN as a coordinating editor for their universal news group. This year, she received the J.G. Taylor Spink Award from the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
