Award-Winning Broadcaster Imparts Career Wisdom on Future Media Professionals
If you're a sports enthusiast, Holly Rowe is a familiar name who has likely graced your screen. A prominent figure at ESPN since 1998, she offers viewers real-time insights into the sports they love, covering everything from the WNBA Draft and women's volleyball to major college football games and the Little League World Series.
University of Nebraska-Omaha students and faculty were recently treated to a keynote speaking presentation from Rowe. In it, she openly shared her career path and early challenges breaking into sports media. She hopes to fuel the next wave of sports journalists while reflecting on the opportunities she's received.
Rowe, who began modestly as an intern for the school newspaper at the University of Utah, became the first female in-game commentator in Utah Jazz Basketball history in the fall of 2021.
"I get paid to watch sports…I think I'm on the biggest scam in the history of jobs, because they pay me to cover all these amazing games and experiences," Rowe said, emphasizing her passion for the field. "Find out what you're passionate about," she advised the students. "I've grown up to be a grown-up who's just really obsessed with sports."
