Golf Icon and Mental Health Speaker David Feherty to Visit Missouri State

Former Pro Golfer and Beloved Broadcaster to Share Insights on Resilience

If you love the sport of golf, you’ve undoubtedly heard of David Feherty. The Northern Irishman turned pro in 1976, playing nearly two decades on the European Tour and PGA Tour, winning five European Tour events and representing Europe in the 1991 Ryder Cup. After retiring from golf, he became a prominent golf commentator, working for CBS, NBC Sports, and currently LIV Golf.

Missouri State University has invited him to serve as the keynote speaker at its Public Affairs Conference 2025. The inspiring talent is set to bring his sharp wit and unfiltered honesty to offer a message of building resilience in the face of adversity and overcoming seemingly insurmountable hardships.

The keynote event kicks off the conference at 7 p.m. on September 16 at Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts. The theme is “Resilient People. Resilient Future.”

“With heart and hard-earned perspective, David will bring a candid, compassionate voice to the resilience conversation at our conference this year,” said Brent Dunn, Missouri State University Foundation executive director.

He has written four best-selling books, including “A Nasty Bit of Rough” (2003) and “Somewhere in Ireland a Village Is Missing an Idiot” (2013). He has openly discussed his struggles with alcoholism, depression after tragically losing his son Shey to a drug overdose in 2017, and a 2011 bipolar disorder diagnosis. He uses humor as a path to healing and resilience.

Attendees who opt for a VIP experience will have the opportunity to meet Feherty and receive a signed copy of his latest book, “Feherty: The Remarkably Funny and Tragic Journey of Golf’s David Feherty” (2023).
