Basketball Hall of Famer Earl Monroe Speaks at Alma Mater’s Fundraiser

Over the weekend, NBA legend Earl Monroe returned to Winston-Salem State University. There were several fundraising events that he made an appearance at over the weekend.

Festivities kicked off on Friday with an invitation-only reception to honor the 1967 NCAA championship team. Monroe served as keynote speaker for a scholarship fundraising breakfast the next morning.

Tickets for Bond. Score. Win. were $100. Later in the day, Monroe had his jersey retired during WSSU's game against St. Augustine's.

Monroe spent his 14-year career with the Baltimore Bullets and New York Knicks. He was a four-time All-Star and All-NBA First Team selection in 1969.

After being the second overall pick in the 1967 NBA Draft, Monroe won the league's Rookie of the Year award in 1968. After being traded to the Knicks in 1971, he helped the franchise win the NBA title in 1973.
