Arizona State football coach Herm Edwards has a unique way of stirring up a room. While he was away from coaching he became known as one of the top motivational speakers in sports and still books several engagements every offseason. 

Edwards recently had the unique opportunity to pay tribute to the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. as the keynote speaker at Scottsdale's annual MLK celebration dinner. He addressed nearly 400 people about Dr. King's powerful vision that still impacts us today. 

"Dr. King saw a problem and he said, ‘You know what? You gotta’ fix it," said Edwards. "I am going to do something to fix it.’ He wanted to fix things for his children and his children’s children.”

One of King's most notable qualities that Edwards focused on throughout his presentation was leadership. He shared play-by-play instructions on how to lead, which were highlighted by the characteristics hope, vision, opportunity and integrity. 

“A goal without a plan is a wish. What are you doing to create opportunities? If you’re a leader today; you must tell them why in the beginning. Why we are going to do that and how,” Edwards said.

Edwards has taken a master course on leadership as a coach in some capacity for over three decades. He is best known for his run in the NFL as the head coach of the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs. 

In his eight years in the pros, Edwards took teams to the playoffs four times. He has now successfully turned around the Sun Devils program, leading ASU to 7-6 and 8-5 campaigns in his first two seasons. 

Edwards also enjoyed a ten-year playing career in the NFL, recording 33 interceptions while playing mostly for the Philadelphia Eagles. In his time away from coaching, he also gained popularity as an analyst for ESPN.
