2009 World Series MVP Hideki Matsui Speaks at the Field Club of Greenwich

Despite retiring from baseball in 2012, Hideki Matsui is still using his name to do good work in the community. On Wednesday, he spoke at a joint breakfast fundraiser for the Global Citizens Initiative and his Matsui 55 Baseball Foundation.

The event was held in Greenwich, Connecticut at the Field Club of Greenwich. Matsui spoke at length about the work he does through his charity to inspire youth to play baseball.

Since founding the organization in 2015, he has hosted clinics for children in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Japan. The Global Citizens Initiative runs a leadership summit for around 25 young people each year.

Matsui established himself as one of the great home run hitters in Japanese baseball history during a decade run with the Yomiuri Giants. He was a nine-time Nippon Professional Baseball All-Star and three-time league MVP.

In 2002, Matsui was signed by the New York Yankees. He was runner-up for the 2003 American League Rookie of the Year and was named to the All-Star team in 2003 and 2004.

Matsui was named 2009 World Series MVP after hitting .615 with 3 home runs and 8 RBI. He spent one season each with the Los Angeles Angels, Oakland Athletics and Tampa Bay Rays before retiring in 2012.
