1968 Olympics Activist Tommie Smith Keynotes Augusta City Classic Hall of Fame Banquet

One famous image has stood the test of time and helped former Olympic track star Tommie Smith go down in history. Smith will share his unique perspective on the nature of activism today as the keynote speaker at the Augusta City Classic Hall of Fame Banquet.

The event will be held tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the Augusta Marriott and Convention Center. Smith says some of the issues he fought against in 1968 still exist today and he has a couple things on his mind he wants to address.

Dr. Andrew Mac Bowman and Coach Robert "Poppa" Grant will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. It should be a tremendous night for sports enthusiasts.

Smith raced to victory in the 200 meters at the 1968 Olympics, but what he did next was what would truly be remembered. He stood alongside his teammate Juan Carlos on the medal stand raising the Black Power salute.

Their protest against racial inequality has been recognized in many forms over the years. They received the 2008 Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the ESPYs and a statue memorializing their moment stands at their alma mater, San Jose State University.

Smith broke seven individual world records during his track and field career. He also won the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with the Spartans.
